The latest statistics from Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) show that ransomware attacks across the globe were up 13% in the last 12 months, making it one of the biggest threats to businesses in 2022.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of malicious software that is downloaded onto a computer, via viruses or phishing attacks, holding the victim’s data and sensitive files hostage until a ransom is paid.

This form of cyber attack is on the rise as it is an effective means for hackers to exploit sensitive information, which can be gained if a business has a weak online security system in place.

A successful ransomware attack can cripple businesses, expose sensitive information such as passwords, addresses, and bank details, and highlight vulnerabilities for future attacks.

How to protect against ransomware

To help prevent a data breach and stop hackers from gaining access to your information, make sure you backup all your files in the cloud or on an external hard drive. This means that if you do lose your files to ransomware, you can safely wipe your computer and reinstall your files from backup.

The best way to stop a potential attack in its tracks is to use the latest security software and keep it up to date. Updating software regularly ensures that it works well and can scan for potential malware and viruses effectively to remove them.

By staying up to date with the latest cyber security news, understanding how to identify risks, andwhat to do when things go wrong, you can help to mitigate the risk of cyber threats and keep yourself and your business safe.
